Background:
Hawthorn Tree Primary opened in 1968, and was subsequently enlarged in 1972 and 1993. The school is oversubscribed with two applications for every place. Facilities include nine classrooms, a dining room, library, hall, resource room, administration area and a pre-school playgroup. The grounds comprise an enclosed garden, cycle store, a playing field and two playgrounds. The school participates in inter-school competitions in swimming, football, rounders, netball and cricket, and external sports coaching is used when available. A 'wide variety' of after-school clubs includes sports, chess, guitars, computers, German, French, scrabble, art, choir, and country dancing, and pupils support a number of charities as part of the school's links with the community. Hawthorn Tree aims to 'equip all children with the skills and knowledge necessary to play a happy, useful, constructive and fulfilled role in society'.
