Background:

Welton St Mary's is situated in the 'pleasant rural' village of Welton, five miles north of Lincoln. The school was founded in 1826 when it was housed in a building on the village green. A new site was provided in 1948 and the current building opened in 1992, with 11 classrooms, a hall, a library, a special needs room and a music practice room. The grounds boast a play area for children under five, a secure wild area with pond for environmental work, playgrounds and a sports field. The school uses a thematic approach to education. Each term there are trips and visitors to help children learn through first-hand experience, and all Year 6 children have the chance to take part in a residential field trip. The school's sports teams have been 'successful' and the first aid team have reached the national finals of the St John's Life Saver's competition for two consecutive years. Children have the opportunity to learn string, brass and woodwind instruments and those who do so contribute to charity fundraising projects by participating in an annual concert in aid of the visually impaired. Work in the community has been rewarded with a Schools Curriculum Award. 'We feel that a child's education is a team effort which involves the school, parents and the community'.
