Background:

Founded as a boys' establishment, Westgate became a mixed primary school in 1973. The buildings have been enlarged many times, and the styles are a mixture of Victorian, 1960's and 1990's buildings. The school is situated opposite the walls of Lincoln castle and is therefore in the centre of Lincoln's tourist centre whilst serving a very mixed catchment area. It is 'highly regarded' in the area and is currently over-subscribed with a waiting list. Parents 'recognise the effort' put in by the teachers 'particularly with regard to mathematics and English'. Music forms an 'integral' part of school life and the school boasts an 'excellent' choir which not only performs in school, but also locally and on regional radio. Westgate only has a 'small' field but nevertheless 'does well' at sport, winning the area football club and performing 'well' in athletics. Community links are 'strong' and the choir is a medium for strengthening these links. The school also collaborated 'closely' with the city council over traffic management and the Christmas market. Westgate supports local charities, particularly those connected with children and keeps a 'high profile' with the press.
