Background:

Formed in 1983 from amalgamation of Gainsborough Girls' High School and Queen Elizabeth Grammar School for Boys, which was founded in 1589 under charter from Queen Elizabeth I to Robert Somerscales. Occupies large site on campus to north of town. Since 1989, it has expanded from four-form entry to six-form entry. Admits top 25 per cent of ability range; takes pupils from Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire in addition to Lincolnshire. Strong in music and sport. Over-subscribed, with nearly three applications per place. Ethos: 'The school aims to maintain a friendly, caring and secure atmosphere, in which students can flourish, both in their academic studies and in the fullrange of other activities provided by the school'.
