Background:
The school was founded in 1952 by the Rev William Farr, who bought five acres of land and buildings that had been the site of a Second World War bomber station; became an 11-to-16 comprehensive in 1972; sixth form added in 1995; now occupies 35 acres on edge of villages of Welton and Dunholme, six miles north of Lincoln. consistently over-subscribed. Pupils come from an area of about 200 square miles and many are from the catchment area of other schools. A fire in 1992 destroyed science laboratories, which were rebuilt at a cost of £500,000; also improvements made to resources for technology and new buildings for mathematics and ICT. Geography and history buildings opened by the Queen and Prince Philip in 1996; further £6million development programme began in 1999, to provide additional resources for mathematics and special needs. Final phase will see the opening of a £2million performing arts centre and removal of temporary classrooms. by May 2006. Reputation for sporting achievement at local, regional and national level. Wide range of musical groups, with 30 per cent of pupils learning a musical instrument.Links with France, Germany, United States, and Australia; ski trips to Italy. Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme; World Challenge expeditions to Pakistan, India, Madagascar, Bolivia and Vietnam. Charity fundraising 'an essential part of school life'. Specialist technology college status from 2002. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place.
