Background:
Barrowby School is situated adjacent to Barrowby All Saints' Church, in a large rural village near Grantham. It has a 'rich local environment' and 'extensive' school grounds with two playgrounds, a large playing field, wildlife area and large pond. The school has historical links with the church, having been founded in 1851 as a Church of England School, and 'continues to value that connection'. The school offers a 'wide variety' of extra curricular activities including a school band, woodwind, brass, violin and guitar tuition, recorder groups, choir, handbells, country dancing, art and computing. Sporting activities include football, netball, athletics, rounders, gymnastics and tennis. A 'wide variety' of day visits are offered across the age range, and visiting groups present drama and other productions. Year 5 pupils are offered the opportunity of a residential visit to an adventure centre each year. All Key Stage 2 pupils swim and all enjoy taking part in local schools competitions, in two different football leagues, seven-a-side, athletics, netball and rounders competitions. In recent years the school has won the league cup in football. In 1998, the school organised and hosted the local schools' recorder festival and took part in the Grantham Music Festival. All pupils take part in school productions each year. The school maintains 'close links' with the church and pupils regularly work with a range of community groups including playschool and local residential homes for the elderly, and also take part in local charity performances. The school raises funds for itself when necessary, and pupils are also encouraged to raise money for local and national charities. The Friends of Barrowby School (Parent Association) also raise considerably funds with the staff, parents and pupils.
