Background:
Founded in 1636, originating from bequest of William Trollope; moved to current site in 1921; extensive playing fields and modern buildings, all post-1960, including sports hall built in 1995 and extended technology accommodation in 1997; new 1.1m teaching block for art, music and modern languages opened in 2001; another 1.3 million teaching block in 2004. Excellent provision for A-level French, German and Spanish; separate sciences offered at GCSE. Performing arts and sport very strong; extensive extra-curricular programme. Provision for gifted and able, and for other special needs. The school is a Centre of Excellence, retaining the traditional values of a grammar school, but embracing the impact of new technologies. Strong emphasis on personal development as well as academic success. Breakfast club, from 8am; after-school activities, until 6pm. Over-subscribed, with nearly three applications per place.
